Qube Technologies Receives Approval for Continuous Methane Monitoring Under New Mexico’s Ozone Precursor Rule

The New Mexico Environment Department has conditionally approved Qube's continuous monitoring system as a pre-approved alternative monitoring technology for oil and gas facilities subject to 20.2.50 NMAC.

CALGARY, AB - October 1, 2026 - Qube Technologies (“Qube”), the global leader in continuous emissions monitoring, is pleased to announce it has received conditional approval from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) for its continuous methane monitoring system. The approval names Qube as a pre-approved alternative monitoring technology under 20.2.50.116.D(2) of the New Mexico Administrative Code, part of the state's Ozone Precursor Rule. Operators can now use Qube's system in an Alternative Monitoring Plan to meet their equipment leak monitoring requirements.

Significance of the NMED Approval

New Mexico's Ozone Precursor Rule requires oil and gas operators to run regular leak detection and repair (LDAR) programs, most often through optical gas imaging (OGI) surveys and audio, visual and olfactory (AVO) inspections. These surveys capture emissions on the day a crew is on site.

NMED reviewed Qube's Alternative Equipment Leak Monitoring Plan (AELMP). The department confirmed a set of Qube work practices that will meet or exceed the methane mitigation performance of Part 50 OGI surveys, including weekly AVO inspections.

To use the technology at a specific facility, an operator provides advance notice to NMED under 20.2.50.116.D(2)(a) and deploys the system according to the approved plan.

How Qube’s Continuous Monitoring Works

Qube devices continuously measure methane concentrations and combine those readings with environmental data to detect, locate and quantify emissions. The approval covers three deployment configurations:

  • Qube Fenceline: Sitewide continuous monitoring devices placed between 10 and 100 meters from equipment, in enough locations to filter out upwind offsite sources while keeping onsite emissions in view.

  • Qube Lite: Source-level, intrinsically safe continuous monitoring devices placed within 0.5 meters of the equipment they monitor, for close-range coverage of specific sources.

  • Qube Fenceline + Qube Lite Hybrid System: A combination of site and equipment-level monitoring as stated in the two previous configurations. Qube Lites catch the venting at the source and the Qube Fencelines characterize the plume as it disperses. The result is faster detection, precise localization, and more accurate quantification.

Key Benefits of Qube’s NMED-Approved Continuous Monitoring

  1. Regulatory compliance: A pre-approved path to meet 20.2.50 NMAC equipment leak monitoring requirements.

  2. Operational efficiency: Fewer scheduled site visits, with crews only sent to confirmed emission sources.

  3. Data-driven insights: Continuous detection and quantification across every monitored site.

  4. Environmental impact: Faster repairs that cut methane and ozone precursor emissions.
